9 Search Engine Optimization Mistakes to Avoid

Building successful websites just doesn’t happen overnight. You have to create the pages, write content, optimize your pages and drive traffic to your website. Below are some important SEO (search engine optimization) mistakes that can lead to poor rankings in the search engines.

Look out for following SEO mistakes:

Bad or No Page Title – It is extremely important to use a page title. Your page title should be descriptive and useful both for the search engines and your visitors. Without a page title, it will make big damage to your search engines rankings.

  • Bad Robots Metatags – The robots metatag tells the search engine spiders what parts of your web site they can/cannot crawl.
Only Two parameters: Index/Noindex and Follow/Nofollow.

Your robot metatags should look like this: <meta name="robots" content="index, (No)follow"> Index: the page should be indexed(default), Noindex: the page should not be indexed

  • No Backlinks – this is VERY IMPORTANT. Quality backlinks are crucial to YOUR success because they will dramatically improve your rankings in the search engines, better rankings will generate more CASH for you.

Be aware that it's nearly impossible to achieve excellent search engines results without quality links pointing to your website. Avoid link farms!

  • Hidden Text - Hidden content is used to trick search engines (Black Hat SEO). If they find out, your website can get banned forever. Don't take the risk and use proper techniques to achieve better rankings.

  • Duplicate Content - Avoid duplicated content, don't copy and paste content from another web site because nowadays, search engines are getting very smart and will never index your page due to their duplicate content filter.

  • Flash – Flash content can be a very useful tool for your website visitors but search engines are not able to index it. If you use Flash, than make sure you write some relevant keyword rich content to get the page indexed.

  • No Site Map - If you are using a very complex menu system (flash, javascript..), search engine spiders (Googlebot, Yahoo Slurp, MSNbot and others) may not be able to crawl and index your content pages, it is absolutely a must to create an easy to crawl Site Map using text links, doing this way, a spider can index your content pages.

  • No Meta Data – Meta tags must contain relevant information about the content page. Make sure you use Meta Description, and Keywords Meta tags because it makes your site and pages more searchable both for the search engines and potential visitors.

  • Targeting wrong Keywords or just too many – Only select the keywords relevant to a content page because you want to attract visitors with interest in that page’s content. If you’ve got more than five keywords in your page's tags, you’ve got probably too many.
